The famous Alfa Romeo car brand has a history steeped in motorsports, including Grand Prix motor racing, Formula One, and touring car racing, with their achievements along the way providing a sporty image to the Italian marque that still remains to this day.

First Alfa Romeo EV.

The new Junior Elettrica compact SUV is the latest offering from Alfa Romeo, and it represents two firsts for the brand. Not only is it the brand’s first electric car, but it is also the first Alfa Romeo to feature a centrally-mounted front registration plate in order to satisfy new pedestrian safety regulations. Being part of the multi-brand Stellantis Group provided Alfa Romeo access to already-proven electric powertrains and platforms, so the new Junior has hit the ground running, so to speak. Competitors to the Junior Elettrica are plentiful, and key rivals include the Kia EV3, Jeep Avenger, Peugeot e-2008, VW ID.3, Renault Megane, MG4, Hyundai Kona, Opel Mokka, Renault 5, and lots more besides.

Italian Design Flair.

The exterior design of the Junior features plenty of Italian flair, and it looks like nothing else in the compact SUV market segment. The C-shaped front lights showcase a modern interpretation of Alfa Romeo’s classic three-light signature, and the traditional V-shaped scudetto-shield front grille comes with either Alfa Romeo script across it, or with the Alfa Romeo logo cut into it depending on the trim line chosen. There are three versions of the Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica to choose from; entry-level Elettrica, mid-spec Elettrica Speciale, and the flagship Elettrica 280 Veloce. Gaining access into the electric realm, the Junior Elettrica boasts two electrifying versions ranging from 156hp to 280hp: each conceived for a specific driving style, unified by the essence of Alfa Romeo’s sporty DNA. The Junior is based on the same recently-updated e-CMP platform as other cars in the Stellantis Group, and it also gets the same 54kWh lithium-ion NMC battery. This provides the 154bhp (156PS) Elettrica and Elettrica Speciale versions with a WLTP combined driving range of up to 410km, while the 276bhp (280PS) Veloce sacrifices a portion of range in favour of performance with an official range of up to 347km from a fully charged battery. Efficiency is enhanced by a heat pump that comes as standard across the range – a feature that is a costly optional extra with some of the Junior’s competitors – and it minimises the range loss typically associated with heating an EV cabin in winter.

Whether at home or on the go, you are equipped with the convenience and efficiency needed to undertake any journey. With AC charging (11kW), the Junior Elettrica reaches a full charge from 0-100% in 5 hours and 45 minutes using the Mode 3 cable that comes as standard. By using one of the ever-growing number of DC fast charging stations around Ireland, it is possible to achieve a 20-80% charge in less than 30 minutes at a peak charging speed of 100kW.

Sportscar-Inspired Cabin.

The Junior’s cabin successfully balances sportiness with everyday usability, and its five-seat layout provides comfortable accommodation for adults in both rows. The Elettrica Speciale trim enhances comfort with premium seats featuring additional bolstering and support for spirited driving. The standard ambient lighting system creates a sophisticated atmosphere after dark, with customisable colours that allow drivers to personalise their environment. Sound insulation is excellent, with road and wind noise well suppressed, even at motorway speeds. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is bright and legible in all lighting conditions, presenting essential information in a clear, driver-focused format. The centrepiece of the Junior Elettrica’s on-board technology is the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is responsive and logically organised. The screen’s positioning is optimal for driver visibility without requiring excessive eye movement away from the road. For security and vehicle monitoring, the Alfa Connect services provide real-time information about the vehicle’s status, including charging progress, location, and the ability to precondition the cabin temperature while still connected to grid power. Boot space in the Junior Elettrica measures in at a generous 400-litres behind the rear seats, with up to 1285-litres available by dropping the rear seats when required. A variable-height boot floor is useful for hiding the electric cables when not in use, and the available space can also be used to store valuables out of the sight of prying eyes when parked up. The cargo area features a flat load floor when the seats are folded, making it easy to accommodate larger items.

DNA Drive Modes.

The Junior Elettrica features three distinct drive modes: Dynamic for spirited driving with sharper throttle response, Natural for everyday balance, and Advanced Efficiency for maximising range. Each mode adjusts multiple vehicle parameters including power delivery, steering weight, and regenerative braking intensity.

On-The-Road Driving Experience.

My test car was a mid-spec Junior Elettrica Speciale which was finished in magnificent Brea Red metallic paintwork with a Tortona Black roof and door mirror casings for maximum visual impact. Key standard features include: 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, leather steering wheel (multi-function), heated front seats, 6-speaker sound system, rear-view camera with dynamic gridlines, parking sensors, 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, Progresso Scudetto V-Shield front grille, and a matt black body kit with Rosso Bera inserts, along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features. The Junior Elettrica truly shines in urban environments, where its smooth acceleration makes city driving a delightful experience. The throttle mapping is remarkably consistent, providing predictable responses that inspire confidence, with power delivered in a manner that feels natural and progressive. The car’s strong throttle response and excellent body control make motorway journeys enjoyable too, and it can happily keep up with fast-moving traffic along the way. The Junior features sharp, well-weighted steering that provides direct feedback to the driver. This connection between car and driver has long been an Alfa Romeo hallmark, and it is satisfying to see this characteristic preserved in their transition to electric mobility. The Junior’s balanced chassis and responsive controls make everyday driving more engaging than many competitors in the fully-electric compact SUV segment. It is impressively light and agile for an EV, and its overall ride quality and refinement is excellent.
