New Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is Genuinely Credible.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric is celebrated for its class-leading range, lightning-fast 800V charging capability, and cutting-edge cabin tech. Designed to be the brand’s most efficient compact model, the new CLA draws directly from the development of the EQXX concept – an experimental ultra-efficient concept car designed to break electric vehicle range barriers.
European Award Winner.
Recently voted European Car of the Year 2026, the new CLA now comes in fully electric versions, and in a range of long-distance, high-tech 48-volt mild hybrid models with a 1.5-litre petrol powered engine, plus the availability within the range of 4MATIC all-wheel drive. For the first time for Mercedes-Benz, the combustion-engine and battery electric CLA models feature identical designs for the exterior and interior, as well as sharing a model name. This marks the end of the brand’s strategy of entirely bespoke battery electric models being developed to sit alongside their combustion-engine equivalents, such as with the E-Class and EQE.
Aerodynamic Champion.
The new CLA retains the sleek, aerodynamic roofline of its predecessor, and it boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.21, making it one of the most aerodynamic production cars in the world. The CLA Electric sports a dynamic front grille studded with 142 animated three-pointed stars that illuminate at night, with a large (illuminated) Mercedes-Benz emblem proudly located in the centre. From the side, there are frameless doors and retractable flushed door handles, and the rear fascia has a GT-inspired design. It has star shaped LED taillights connected by a light bar with distinctive lighting animations, gloss black rear diffuser, and the numberplate is housed on the rear bumper.
More Premium Than Ever.
Despite the electric CLA’s relatively-low, four-door coupe-like shape, it comes with a useful 405-litre of cargo space, along with a practical 101-litre frunk that is ideal for storing the charging cables. Understandably, the sloping roofline does restrict rear-seat space for taller passengers, but the space in the front row is surprisingly good. The driver’s environment is genuinely premium, with well-stitched materials, distinctive ambient lighting, and a large curved display that is impressive from every angle. The new CLA is the first car to operate entirely on the in-house developed Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) – using QNX for the safety-related functions and the dashboard cluster, and Linux for the infotainment. It is also the brand’s first in-car infotainment system to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) from both Microsoft and Google. A comprehensive suite of crash protection and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are supplied as standard across the new CLA model range. For the first time in its segment, the CLA is available with a central airbag integrated into the driver’s seat backrest, and it deploys between the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact.
Model & Battery Options.
The CLA Electric is available in four designations – CLA 200, CLA 250, CLA 250+ and CLA 350, with battery capacities ranging from 58kWh to 85kWh, and buyers can choose between Progressive Line and AMG Line trim versions. As is the case across the entire Mercedes-Benz model line-up, the CLA can be specified with numerous optional equipment packages for ultimate personalisation. The innovative 800-volt electric architecture used by Mercedes-Benz significantly reduces charging times, allowing for a 325km charge in less than 10 minutes – model dependent. Official potentially-achievable WLTP range figures very between 529kms and 790kms depending on the battery capacity chosen.
Test Car Details.
My test car was a new CLA 200 Electric AMG Line which was finished in beautiful Alpine Grey solid paintwork (a €2,459 option). Key standard AMG Line equipment includes: 18” AMG 5 x twin-spoke alloy wheels, KEYLESS GO, light carbon-grain aluminium trim elements, ARTICO man-made leather & microfibre upholstery, two LCD projectors in the front doors (lighting of the exit area and animated Mercedes-Benz pattern), ambient lighting (with 64 colours and 10 colour schemes), AMG floor mats, sports seats with adjustable head restraints, brushed stainless steel sports pedals, wireless charging system for mobile devices, and a multifunction sports steering wheel in Nappa leather with flattened bottom. Also included is an AMG body-styling kit, which consists of an AMG front apron with front splitter in chrome, AMG side sill panels, AMG rear apron with chrome trim. A vast amount of comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features also come as standard, as does Mercedes-Benz’ legendary build quality. The front sports seats are very comfortable and supportive, and they add a real sense of occasion to every journey. Everywhere you look in the cabin you will see exceptionally-high material and build quality, as well as a host of cutting-edge tech. The electric motor produces 224hp and 335Nm of torque, providing the car with the ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.5-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 210km/h (where permitted), Overall ride comfort is excellent, with road, tyre and wind noise nicely isolated from the cabin. The steering is perfectly weighted and pleasingly accurate, so it is easy to place the car exactly where you want it to be on the road. The low-slung nature of the new CLA Electric results in terrific torsional rigidity, and that creates a well-planted feel on the road. The brakes have excellent calibration, making it easy to come to a smooth stop, and drivers can choose the level of regeneration that suits their individual driving style via the paddles behind the steering wheel. A host of cameras and parking sensors located around the car make parking a doddle
Verdict & Price.
The new CLA 200 Electric delivers on its promise of long range ability, and its outstanding driving dynamics, cutting-edge tech, upmarket cabin experience, and super-fast charging capability ensure it is worthy of the famous three-pointed star. The new CLA 200 Electric is priced from €53,425 (inclusive of current Irish Government EV incentives for private buyers).
