Mercedes-Benz T-Class – Redefining the family MPV experience.
Mercedes-Benz T-Class – Redefining the family MPV experience.
Engineered specifically for families with active lifestyles, the new Mercedes-Benz T-Class brings premium quality to the van-based MPV segment. Available across all engine and trim options with a five-seat configuration and an impressive 520-litres of boot space, the 4.5-metre long MPV is a direct competitor to the new VW Caddy Life and Ford Connect Tourneo MPVs. An extended wheelbase option provides space for up to seven occupants in an extra-long body style, but its availability is restricted to the T180 petrol version only.
Upscale Appearance.
In a similar fashion to its VW and Ford rivals, the T-Class is based on a commercial van, in this case the Mercedes-Benz Citan. Having been awarded the prestigious title of ‘Irish Van of the Year 2024’ – in association with Continental Tyres – the new T-Class really has hit the ground running. With its characteristic Mercedes-Benz radiator grille with chrome accents, LED High Performance headlamps, and sporty light-alloy wheels, the new T-Class attracts attention from the very first glance. The upscale appearance is enhanced even further by way of body-coloured bumpers which come as standard, further distancing the T-Class from its commercial vehicle roots.
Premium Cabin Materials.
The smart and upmarket interior of the T-Class is an easy place to get comfortable in, and the large glass areas certainly make it light and airy inside. The use of premium materials provide durability and a luxury feel that elevates the T-Class above segment competitors, and the raised driving position with extensive seat adjustability ensures comfort for drivers of all sizes. Rear seat passengers gain access to the cabin by way of sliding doors on both sides and, as they require very little space to open, getting in and out comfortably is possible even in tight parking spaces. The standard tailgate door opens upwards to an angle of approximately 90-degrees, and this provides plenty of space for loading or unloading, while the large rear window provides a good outward view. However, buyers can optionally select barn-style rear doors (depending on the configuration) if they so wish.
Engine & Trim Options.
Buyers can choose between Style and Progressive trim lines, and between petrol and diesel powertrains – all of which come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission optionally available. The entry-level Style trim line in the new T-Class comes as standard with key features such as: leather multifunction steering wheel, Smartphone integration, multiple airbags (including thorax-side bags and window bags), air-conditioning, armrest with stowage compartment, ECO start-stop function, heat-insulating glass, chrome interior appointments package, upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT, ambient lighting, multi-adjustable steering wheel, electric folding door mirrors, roof rails with integrated carrier bars, rear privacy glass, and a chrome radiator grille, along with a suite of advanced safety features that include Active Brake Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST, Breakdown Assistance Button, and a reversing camera. Additionally, a double locking system provides enhanced safety, and the latest edition of the Mercedes-Benz MBUX multimedia system comes with a 9.5-inch touchscreen display. Upgrading to Progressive trim brings with it heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED high performance headlamps, automatic climate control, a chrome strip on the tailgate door, a navigation package, and Active Parking Assist. For buyers who wish to personalise their new T-Class to their specific needs or taste, a host of individual optional extras and packages are available. The petrol-powered T-Class is available with 102hp (T160) or 131hp (T180), and the diesel-powered derivative comes with a choice of 95hp (T160D) or 116hp (T180D) units – all of which send power to the front wheels.
Test Vehicle Details.
My test vehicle was a Mercedes-Benz T160d in Progressive trim, which was finished in stylish Helvite Silver Metallic paintwork with contrasting bi-tone 17” alloy wheels. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 95hp and 260Nm of torque @ 1750rpm, with power sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. With official fuel consumption as low as 5.3 l/100km on a combined driving cycle, the standard 54-litre fuel tank can provide over 1,000kms of driving range from full to empty. The T-Class has ample room for front and rear seat occupants, and the comfortable front seats are accompanied by three individual good sized rear seats with ISOFIX points in the outer two. The rear seats can be folded down when additional cargo space is required and, even if all three rear seats are folded in this way, there are additional ISOFIX points in the front passenger seat to accommodate a child seat if required. With all of the rear seats folded, the cargo space increases to an incredible 2,127-litres. The turbo-diesel engine is surprisingly refined and punchy for a relatively small powerplant, and it feels livelier than the performance figures suggest. Mercedes-Benz say that its engineers worked hard to differentiate the T-Class from the Citan van, and you can certainly tell that the effort paid off in terms of finesse and noise insulation, with minimal levels of engine grumble making its way into the cabin. The suspension has been tuned for comfort so that rear seat passengers don’t feel like they are seated in the rear of a van, and the overall driving experience is commendable. The T-Class excels at comfortable low-speed driving, ideal for urban family transport, but it can just as happily go with the flow at motorway speeds on longer journeys too. The turbo-diesel powertrain balances everyday performance with impressive efficiency, and the six-speed manual transmission provides the opportunity to maximise its drivability.
Verdict & Price.
The new T-Class successfully bridges the gap between a commercial van and a family car, and it offers Mercedes-Benz luxury within a practical and family-friendly package. Pricing starts from €42,530 for the T-Class 160D Style and from €45,560 in petrol guise, with my test vehicle priced from €48,460. For drivers who are not convinced that an SUV is what they need to transport their family, or support their active lifestyle, the Mercedes-Benz T-Class is a highly credible and likeable alternative.
