New Alfa Romeo Junior Gets Hybrid Power.
New Alfa Romeo Junior Gets Hybrid Power.
The Alfa Romeo Junior is the Italian brand’s new family car, its first entry into the segment since the withdrawal of the Alfa Romeo Giuletta in 2020. The Junior blends classic Italian flair with modern tech and practicality, and is available with pure electric or hybrid powertrain options. Originally unveiled as the Milano in April 2024, the name had to be dropped because of the Italian Government’s “Made in Italy” rules, which forced the brand to rename it as it manufactured in Poland alongside the Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger. Alfa Romeo then took the decision to revive the Junior name previously used on the iconic Alfa GT Junior coupe from the 1960’s and ‘70’s. The Junior small SUV slots in below the Tonale in the Alfa Romeo model line-up.
Sporty Italian Design.
The Junior shares the same CMP/e-CMP platform with other Stellantis products such as the Fiat 600, Peugeot 2008, Opel Mokka and Jeep Avenger. The Junior Ibrida (Italian for Hybrid) features the same sensuous and sporty Italian design as its EV sibling, with its distinctive nose carrying the Alfa’s V-shield grille, along with a groove beneath the bonnet edge. Short overhangs and a ‘Kamm tail’ rear design provide the Junior with a real sense of purpose, while its striking LED headlights, muscular wheel arches, unique alloy wheel designs and “floating” roof enhance the car’s visual appeal.
Driver-Focused Cabin.
The Junior’s cabin successfully balances sportiness with everyday usability, and its five-seat layout provides comfortable accommodation for adults in both rows. Sound insulation is excellent, with road and wind noise well suppressed, even at motorway speeds. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is bright and legible in all lighting conditions, presenting essential information in a clear, driver-focused format. The screen’s positioning is optimal for driver visibility without requiring excessive eye movement away from the road. Boot space in the Junior Ibrida measures in at a generous 400-litres behind the rear seats, with up to 1285-litres available by dropping the rear seats when required. The cargo area features a flat load floor when the seats are folded, making it easy to accommodate larger items.
Test Car Details.
My test car was the Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida, which was finished in Navigli Blue paintwork. There are six colour options available – five of which can be specified with a Tortona Black roof at an extra cost. Optional Premium and Tech Packs are also available at a cost of €3,000 each. Key standard Ibrida equipment includes 17-inch Turbine alloy wheels, LED headlights, LED rear lights, rear parking sensors, dual 10.25-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless start, Iconica fabric seat upholstery, ambient lighting, paddle shift controls, and a host of advanced safety systems, along with many more comfort, convenience, infotainment, and connectivity features. At the heart of the Junior Ibrida lies a sophisticated 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine integrated with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This combination pairs a 21kW electric motor with a compact 0.9kWh battery, delivering an impressive 145hp and 230Nm of torque through a responsive six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. The mild hybrid system assists during low-speed urban driving, enabling brief electric-only power that enhances fuel efficiency in stop-start traffic. Three selectable drive modes – Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency (or DNA for short) – allow drivers to tailor the Junior Ibrida’s character to suit their driving style and road conditions. The system adjusts the steering weight, throttle response, and brake pedal feel, offering remarkable versatility. The handling remains characteristically Alfa Romeo: firm, and engaging, ensuring that the driving experience remains at the forefront of the ownership proposition. The Junior Ibrida can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 8.9 seconds, but when you accelerate there is a hybrid-typical delay in the throttle response while the hybrid system gets to work. Once that happens, you get a good initial shove thanks to the e-motor, and at low revs the engine delivers adequate power. Over-the-shoulder visibility is somewhat hampered by the rising window line and chunky rear pillars, but the view is good out of the front and side windows. The Junior Ibrida features sharp, well-weighted steering that provides direct feedback to the driver. This connection between car and driver has long been an Alfa Romeo hallmark, and it is satisfying to see this characteristic preserved in their transition to petrol/electric mobility. The Junior’s balanced chassis and responsive controls make every-day driving more engaging than many competitors in the hybrid compact SUV segment. It is impressively light and agile, and its overall ride quality and refinement is excellent.
Verdict, Price & Warranty.
Positioned alongside the all-electric Elettrica and the high-performance Veloce variants, this compact B-segment hybrid SUV demonstrates Alfa Romeo’s commitment to offering diverse powertrain options, whilst maintaining the sporting DNA that has defined the iconic brand for over 100 years. The new Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida is priced from €34,995 (ex-works) and it is supplied with a 5-year warranty. There is also an 8 year / 160,000km warranty on the battery as standard.
