The all-new Skoda Elroq introduces a new design language for the brand, representing a significant step forward in the company’s visual identity. Called ‘Modern Solid’, this forward-thinking design incorporates a front end that loses the previous Skoda signature look of a wide gaping grille, replacing it with a sleeker, more contemporary appearance, complete with a “Tech-Deck Face” – a gloss-black panel that houses a series of cameras and sensors for driver assistance purposes. This sleek fascia is complimented by slim LED upper lights that act as daytime running lights and indicators, while the twin lower LEDs are the headlights. On top-spec models, the 36 individual matrix-LED segments come with five modes to cover city, country, motorway, all-weather and tourist settings. From the side profile, the Elroq maintains classic SUV proportions but with a more aerodynamic silhouette, which is crucial for maximising range. The slightly sloping roofline doesn’t compromise headroom for rear seat passengers, but gives the car a sporty profile. Black cladding around the wheelarches helps to emphasise the Elroq’s tough appearance, while standard 20” alloy wheels (or optional 21” alloys) enhance the rugged look. The rear features a more familiar Skoda design that consists of a triangular LED lighting layout, and a roof spoiler that contributes to the Elroq’s low drag-coefficient figure of 0.26Cd.
Trim & Drivetrain Options.
The Elroq sits on the VW Group’s MEB platform, which underpins a host of VW Group models, including its larger sibling, the Enyaq. It is available with a choice of three battery sizes across three distinct trim levels – Elroq, Sportline and RS – and buyers can choose from three solid colours and six metallic paint finishes on offer. Entry-level Elroq and mid-spec Sportline trims comes with a rear-wheel drive configuration, with an all-wheel drive format reserved for the flagship RS variant. All the usual “Simply Clever” features that the Skoda brand has become famous for are also present in the Elroq. Such items include an ice scraper with an integrated tyre tread depth gauge mounted in the boot lid, an umbrella discretely located in the door lining, and a removable lidded bin in the front centre armrest – all of which could prove very useful from time to time. The entry 52kWh battery model is branded ‘50’ and offers a WLTP range of up to 375km from a fully-charged battery. The 59kWh version is branded ‘60’ and its range is increased to 427km, while the range-topping 77kWh version, which is branded ‘85’, provides up to 568km on a single charge. Depending on the model chosen, the Elroq can be charged at a DC fast charging station at speeds of up to 185kW, and this means a 10-80% charge can be completed in between 24 and 28 minutes. Connecting to an 11kW wallbox (3-phase) charger results in a 0-100% charge time of 5.3 hours, 6.3 hours and 8 hours for the Elroq 50, 60 and 85 respectively.
Modern, Practical & Quality Cabin.
The generously-proportioned cabin in the Elroq successfully balances modern technology with practical usability, and it immediately impresses with its high-quality materials and thoughtful design. Soft-touch leatherette adorns the dashboard and door panels, while carbon and chrome-effect decorative inserts, along with aluminium foot pedals, enhance the sporty look and feel within. At the centre of the dashboard sits a 13” touchscreen infotainment system that features crisp graphics, responsive touch controls and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Thankfully, Skoda has retained physical buttons for key functions in a dedicated row beneath the screen, including climate controls and driving mode selection. The digital driver display behind the steering wheel presents information clearly, and can be customised to show different layouts according to driver preference. The multi-function, flat-bottom steering wheel with padded grips has a lovely feel to it, while paddle shifters behind the wheel make it easy to access the desired level of brake regeneration. The Elroq’s blend of digital innovation and practical controls demonstrates Skoda’s understanding of what drivers actually want from their vehicle, making the Elroq’s cabin a pleasant environment for every journey. The boot offers a generous 470 litres of space with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,580 litres when folded.
Test Car Details.
My test car was a Skoda Elroq 85 Sportline, which was finished in striking Velvet Red metallic paintwork. The Sportline trim elevates the Elroq’s appearance with exclusive design elements that emphasise its dynamic character. In addition to a comprehensive array of standard comfort, convenience, infotainment and safety features found in the entry-level Elroq, upgrading to Sportline trim brings with it 20” Vega alloy wheels, front sports seats, Matrix LED headlights, Sportline exterior styling, Sportline interior design selection, and an electric tailgate with a virtual pedal for handsfree access, along with black window surrounds, black roof rails, and dynamic rear indicators. With its rear-wheel drive configuration and single electric motor producing 281bhp (210kW) and 545Nm of torque, the Elroq 85 offers thoroughly engaging dynamics. The immediate torque delivery provides brisk acceleration, with a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 6.6 seconds, and a top speed limited to 180km/h (where permitted). As a result, effortless acceleration from a standstill is a given, with the electric motor also providing strong mid-range performance that enables confident overtaking ability. The firm suspension setup, specific to the Sportline trim, results in minimal body roll through corners, instilling confidence when driving on winding roads, while maintaining enough compliance to absorb most road imperfections. The floor-mounted battery pack lowers the centre of gravity compared to traditional combustion-engine SUVs, and this provides the Elroq with a well-balanced, planted feel on the road. The Sportline trim also receives specific chassis tuning to deliver a more dynamic driving experience, without excessively compromising comfort, and this works exceptionally well in practice. Steering precision is also worthy of mention, as the progressive weighting applied to the steering feels natural and communicative. Drivers can choose between different drive modes to suit their preference and road conditions. Eco mode maximises efficiency, Normal provides a balanced experience, and Sport sharpens throttle response and steering weight for more engaging driving, while an Individual mode allows drivers to select their own settings according to personal preference. Remote vehicle monitoring is provided to the driver via the Skoda Connect App, enabling access to climate pre-conditioning, charging status, vehicle location, and more. Enhanced natural language processing allows for intuitive control of navigation, climate, and entertainment functions via Skoda’s voice assistant feature, eliminating the need for the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel. Thanks to Skoda’s over-the-air feature, regular software improvements are delivered wirelessly, enhancing functionality and adding new features throughout vehicle ownership.
Verdict, Price & Warranty.
Thanks to the Elroq’s perfect blend of practicality, style, innovation and performance, Skoda has created a compelling option for drivers looking to transition to electric mobility without compromise. The welcome retention of physical controls for frequently used functions, combined with a responsive and intuitive touchscreen system, creates a user-friendly environment that avoids the frustrations often associated with overly digitised interiors. On the road pricing for the new Elroq starts at €36,545 (inclusive of VRT rebate and SEAI grant). A 3-year/150,000km warranty comes as standard, with the option to increase this to a 5-year/150,000km warranty at an additional cost.
