New BMW 1 Series is a Great Little Number.

New BMW 1-Series is a Great Little Number.

The original BMW 1 Series was launched in 2004 as a successor to the BMW 3 Series Compact, and now, more than two decades later, it is in its fourth generation. For the first two generations, the 1 Series used a rear-wheel drive layout, while all-wheel drive was introduced as an option on the second generation model in 2012. For the third generation introduced in 2019, the 1 Series switched to a front-wheel drive layout, while retaining the all-wheel drive option, and the new 1 Series continues this trend.

Trim Levels.

The new 1 Series is available in three trim levels – Sport and M Sport in front-wheel drive (FWD) format, and the performance-oriented M135 xDrive with all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard. Each model offers a carefully curated specification that delivers maximum aesthetic appeal, class leading technology and higher levels of comfort and practicality than ever before. A seven-speed automatic transmission with double clutch technology is standard on all models, with M Sport and M135 models additionally benefitting from shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Extensively Improved Chassis Tech.

The new 1 Series benefits from extensively improved chassis technology. Enhanced body rigidity results in better agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics, while an increase in the front wheels’ caster ensures exceptional directional stability and steering feedback. Additionally, the M Adaptive Suspension, which is standard on M Sport and M135 models, provides a stiffer spring/damper set-up with the car lowered, further increasing the car’s dynamic potential without compromising comfort. It automatically adapts to the road surface and individual driving style, and includes M Sport steering for precise cornering.

Driver-Focused Cabin.

The cabin of the 120 M Sport is designed to provide a driver-focused and premium environment. Exclusive M Sport interior features include M sports seats with enhanced side bolstering, providing excellent support during spirited driving, along with an M leather steering wheel, aluminium trim detailing, and M-specific foot pedals. A large, widescreen central touchscreen dominates the high quality dashboard, and a fully digital instrument cluster provides important information to the driver in a clear and concise fashion. Premium materials are used throughout the cabin, including high-quality leather, soft-touch plastics and brushed aluminium accents. The aesthetically-pleasing and functional cabin design creates a comfortable and engaging environment for the driver and up to four passengers. A 300-litre boot capacity should prove big enough for most tasks, but the rear seats can be folded down to dramatically increase the space available if and when required.

Intuitive Infotainment & Connectivity.

In terms of infotainment, the new 1 Series ensures that front seat occupants can expect ultimate flexibility and freedom at their fingertips, thanks to BMW ConnectedDrive. With the latest BMW Operating System included as standard, all occupants can enjoy the benefit of intuitive multimedia, intuitive connectivity, and an intuitive audio sound experience.

Test Car Details.

My BMW 120 M Sport test car was finished in Black Sapphire metallic paintwork, with 18” M Bi-colour Y-spoke alloy wheels. The 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine comes with the assistance of mild-hybrid technology for enhanced fuel efficiency, and this powerplant produces 170 hp and 280 Nm of torque, providing enough shove to sprint from 0-100km/h is just 7.8-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 225 km/h (where permitted). Official WLTP fuel efficiency is quoted at 5.4 l/100km on a combined driving cycle, so the 49-litre petrol tank has the capacity to deliver a range of up to 900 kms. Key standard features include an alarm system, tyre repair kit, M Sport Pack, front heated seats, Driving Assistant, Parking Assistant, Active Guard, DAB Radio, BMW ‘TeleServices’, Personal eSIM, and high-gloss Shadow-line Exterior Trim. Optional extras fitted to my test car were an M Sport Package Pro, which consists of M Sport Brakes with Red Calipers, BMW Individual Lights (Shadow Line), M Sport Seat Belts/ Leather Steering Wheel/ Sport Spoiler, and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line with extended contents. Also fitted was a Technology Pack, which consists of comfort access, folding wing mirrors with auto-dimming function, rear-view mirror with auto-dimming, adaptive LED Headlights, High-Beam Assist, and storage for wireless charging. Additional individual features specified as optional extras include sun protection glass, and a Harmon Kardon surround sound audio system. The exterior of the new BMW 120 M Sport has received significant upgrades through the M Sport package, transforming its appearance into a more aggressive and aerodynamic profile. The most noticeable change is the M aerodynamic package, which includes a distinctive front bumper with larger air intakes, side skirts, and a rear bumper with diffuser inserts. These elements not only enhance the car’s visual appeal but also improve airflow management, contributing to increased stability at higher speeds. The signature BMW kidney grille is finished in high-gloss black, adding to the car’s sporty character, and M badging on the front wings further distinguish the M Sport model. The car feels responsive and agile, with reduced body roll in corners, and the M Sport suspension is a key component of the car’s enhanced driving experience. The M Sport suspension strikes a good balance between sporty handling and everyday comfort, making it suitable for a variety of driving conditions. The car feels more planted on the road than ever before, and the M Sport’s braking system provides increased stopping power and an improved pedal feel. The new BMW 1 Series is still fun-to-drive and it remains at the forefront of the premium hatchback market segment.

Verdict & Price.

For drivers who prioritise sporty styling, engaging handling and advanced technology, the new BMW 120 M Sport is a compelling choice. The car’s fuel efficiency and practicality also make it a good choice for everyday driving. The new BMW 1 Series is priced from €42,590 (120 Sport) with the 120 M Sport version I test priced from €45,320 (without the optional extras mentioned above).
