New Hyundai INSTER EV – With Innovative Flair as Standard.
The all-new, fully-electric Hyundai INSTER is the smallest car currently sold by the South Korean brand in Europe, and it comes with impressive interior space for 4 adults. It joins the brand’s very successful electric car line-up, including the Kona Electric, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and the recently launched IONIQ 9 seven-seat SUV, and it has already been crowned ‘World Electric Vehicle’ in the 2025 World Car Awards. Rivals to the new INSTER include the MINI Electric, Renault 5 EV, and the Fiat 500e, to name but a few.
Head-Turning Design.
The front of the car features pixel-graphic turn signals just under the bonnet line and distinctive circular LED daytime running lights underneath, with the car’s LED headlights (model dependent) integrated within. Rugged wheel arches, with their distinctive cladding, enhance the INSTER’s instantly-recognisable SUV silhouette, while at the rear, Parametric Pixel LED combination lamps (model dependent) provide a futuristic edge. Circular reflectors highlight the rectangular LED turn signals, and the silver skid plate adds a sporty touch.
Freedom To Choose.
The INSTER is available in Signature, Elegance and Cross trim guises, with Standard and Long Range powertrain options with 42kWh and 49kWh batteries respectively. All models feature an on-board charger which accepts AC power at up to 11kW, and the car can also connect to a DC source at up to 120kW, at which rate either battery will recharge from 10-80% in 30 minutes. The Standard Range battery produces 97PS (95hp) and 147Nm of torque, and it can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 11.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 140km/h (where permitted). The Long Range battery produces 115PS (113hp) and 147Nm of torque, and it can complete a 0-100km/h sprint in 10.6 seconds, with the top speed increased to 150km/h. In terms of WLTP real-world range, the Standard and Long Range batteries can achieve up to 300km and 360km respectively – quite possible enough to meet the weekly driving needs of many drivers.

The top-spec INSTER Cross also features the larger battery, along with such addition features as: Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (Rear), Surround View Monitor, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, and an electric sunroof.
Deceptively Spacious.
Thanks to its ease of manoeuvrability, the INSTER is the perfect car for navigating narrow streets and squeezing into tight parking spaces, while its flat floor, flexible fold-flat seats (model dependent) and upright SUV stance provides an amazing amount of interior space for a city car. All seats fold flat to make loading big items easy, and you can slide the rear seats forwards by 160mm (model dependent) to expand the available boot space from 238 to 351-litres. Should rear seat passengers wish to do so, they can recline the seats individually for more comfort, or with the rear seats folded down, the available cargo space increases to a generous 1,059-litres. The INSTER comes equipped with a 10.25” digital cluster and a 10.25” centre touchscreen as standard, and there is a wireless charging dock (model dependent) located in the compact centre console, which was designed to emphasise the sense of spaciousness in the front. The multi-function steering wheel features interactive pixel lights in the form of four-dot LEDs which display key information such as charging status and other crucial information at a glance. All INSTER models are equipped with Bluelink Connected Car Services with online voice recognition and a wide range of features to make driving more convenient and enjoyable. The Bluelink app provides instant access to things like charge status, climate pre-conditioning, and vehicle location. In addition to its class-leading driving range and excellent charging performance, the INSTER offers the most complete technology package in its class with a multitude of advanced safety systems and driver assistance features.
Test Car Details.
My test car was a new INSTER Elegance, which was finished in Abyss Black paintwork with contrasting bi-tone 17” alloy wheels. As mentioned earlier, the Elegance model comes with the larger battery as standard, along with a host of additional equipment, so I feel that the extra financial outlay over the Signature model is money very well spent. The INSTER’s doors close with a reassuring solidness, and the cabin is pleasingly upmarket and ergonomically designed. On the road, the INSTER has a large-car feel due to its refinement, composure and relatively punchy 49kWh powertrain. The instant torque from the electric motor makes the INSTER feel faster than the figures suggest, and its well-defined motorway manners ensure that it is just as happy cruising at motorway speeds as it is negotiating city streets. The paddles behind the steering wheel allow the driver to toggle between several strengths for the regenerative braking, including a one-pedal setting that is of great benefit in stop-start traffic. The upright windscreen and large glass areas around the car enable all occupants to enjoy excellent outward visibility, while also flooding the cabin with lots of natural light. The INSTER tackles every task asked of it in a confident manner, and the overall driving experience is impressive.
Verdict, Price & Warranty.
