Kia’s boldest move in years arrives in the form of the all-new K4 – a mild hybrid hatchback that replaces the beloved Ceed and signals a significant shift in the Korean brand’s global strategy. From its aerodynamic silhouette to its 48-volt powertrain, the K4 is engineered for the modern driver who demands efficiency, cutting-edge tech and value in equal measure.

One Model, One Vision.

The retirement of the Ceed marks the end of a proud European chapter for Kia, as the European-designed icon gives way to a global model with wider appeal for the changing times we are living in. The K4 represents a deliberate embrace of a unified design language, with one model, one vision, sold across multiple continents. Production has moved from Slovakia to Mexico, reflecting Kia’s ambition to serve broader markets from a single, efficient location.

Trim, Engine & Transmission Options.

The K4 is available in three highly-specified three grades – K2, K3 and GT-line. Key standard K2 features include a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, 12.3-inch Digital Driver Cluster, 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, fabric seats, front & rear parking sensors, Forward Collision Avoidance 1.5, heated steering wheel & front seats, LED MFR headlights, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, along with a host of additional comfort, convenience, and safety equipment. Mid-spec K3 trim gains 17-inch alloys, vegan leather seats, black & chrome coated grille, cube projection headlights, rear privacy glass, satin finish beltline, a wireless phone charging pad, driver power adjustable seats with lumbar support, and Blind-spot Collision Avoidance Assist. Additional standard features in GT-line trim includes ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, metal floor pedals, glass sunroof, Digital Key 2.0, electric windows front & rear, driver memory seat, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist 2, Highway Driving Assist 2, and exclusive GT-line exterior & interior styling elements. The sole engine in the K4 model range is a three-cylinder 1.0 litre petrol unit paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that reduces fuel costs without lifestyle compromise. A six-speed manual transmission is standard in K2 and K3 trim configurations, with the GT-line version fitted with a slick-shifting 7-speed DCT automatic transmission as standard.

Expressive New Design.

The K4 introduces an expressive new design with generous exterior dimensions of 4,440mm in length and 1,850mm in width. Its head-turning design features a distinctive floating roofline that tapers elegantly into the rear hatch and highlights the K4’s dynamic and sporty profile. Hidden rear door handles and a unique C-pillar design element create clean, striking lines that enhance its modern aesthetic. The K4’s wide stance and confident front design provide the car with terrific visual appeal, while the Star Map light signature and LED cube projector headlights add a thoroughly modern edge. The rear of the car features inverted L-shaped taillights with a distinctive light signature. A sporty diffuser-style bumper and black lower trim elements add a dash of sportiness to the rear, as does the eye-catching sculpted roof spoiler.

Refined & Spacious Cabin.

Step inside the K4 and you are greeted by a wide horizontal dashboard with thoughtfully arranged features that enhance the feeling of calm and space within the cabin. Thanks to a 2,720mm wheelbase, everyone onboard is guaranteed generous legroom and headroom, with lots of smart storage located throughout the cabin for all of life’s essentials. The K4’s tailgate opens to reveal a well-designed boot with 438 litres of cargo capacity, and this is easily expanded to 1,107 litres when the 60/40 rear seats are folded down. The K4 feels quite plush in the cabin, with lots of soft-touch materials used where it matters most. In traditional Kia fashion, overall build quality is excellent, and the two-tone theme running through the cabin of the K4 GT-Line looks fabulous. In the family hatchback market segment, interior dimensions are often the deciding factor in buying a new car, and the K4’s growth in every key measurement ensures it feels like a genuine step up from the Ceed, not merely a rebranded replacement.

Test Car

My test car was a K4 GT-line, which looked spectacular in its Snow White Pearl paintwork and dark glass roof. The standard 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) powers through gear shifts in a smooth, relaxed manner, and the ‘old style’ gear selector has a good, solid feel to it. Longer and wider than the Ceed it replaces, the K4 delivers meaningfully-improved rear passenger space – a priority for families carrying adults in the back seats. The hatchback body style offers good headroom thanks to its upright rear architecture, making longer journeys considerably more comfortable. A triple-screen infotainment, driver information, and climate control  layout is standard across the range, and the central display is crisp, responsive, and logically arranged, reducing the time a driver spends going through menus. The K4’s chassis has been tuned with a clear priority: comfortable, confidence-inspiring progress rather than sporting flair. A front-wheel drive layout is standard across the entire lineup, delivering the predictable, easy-to-manage handling that family car buyers genuinely appreciate. The punchy, turbocharged petrol engine pulls well from low revs, and it is the perfect companion for the DCT transmission. The K4 can sprint from 0-100km/h in 12.3 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 186km/h (where permitted).  The car is surprisingly nimble through tight corners, while motorway driving is a pleasurable experience too, as the car pulls away quickly and smoothly, getting you up to cruising speed with ease. Overall driving dynamics are truly impressive, and the excellent ride and handling balance adds greatly to the driving pleasure, as the car remains smooth and agile at all times.

Verdict, Price & Warranty.

As a successor to the highly-acclaimed Ceed, the new K4 had big shoes to fill, but Kia’s dedicated team of designers and engineers have created a car that dares to be different, with a style that sets it apart from its mainstream rivals. The K4 is a very competitive hatchback that is easy to drive, comfortable, efficient, and packed with cutting-edge tech and spec. The new Kia K4 in K2 trim is priced from €31,500 (ex-delivery), with the K3 and GT-line variants priced from €34,000 and €38,500 respectively (ex-delivery).
