New Mazda CX-60 Diesel (Mild Hybrid) SUV is a Powerful Cruiser with Premium Appeal.
New Mazda CX-60 Diesel is a Powerful Cruiser, with Premium Appeal.
The strikingly-designed Mazda CX-60 is the most important model that the Japanese manufacturer has introduced for over a decade. Mazda’s new SUV represents everything that the company has built into its DNA over the last 100 years, from outstanding exterior and interior design to the finest Japanese craftsmanship, the latest innovations in human-centric technologies, and a world-class powertrain. An all-new vehicle platform has enabled Mazda to create a large 5-seat SUV with generous space for all occupants and their luggage. Best-in-class boot space means there is an impressive 570-litres behind the rear seats, with a cavernous 1,726-litres available when the rear seats are folded down. For buyers in need of even more space, Mazda’s 7-seat CX-80 SUV is due to be launched in Ireland over the coming months.
Mazda KODO Design Language.
Exquisitely designed inside and out, Mazda’s master craftsmen have shaped the flowing lines of the CX-60 by hand, achieving the perfect balance of refinement and aerodynamics. With the CX-60, it is clear to see that Mazda’s distinctive Kodo design language is woven into the toughness of an SUV. Countless careful details have been crafted with a single purpose in mind: to provide all occupants with an incredible driving experience, while its long bonnet and rearward cabin design guarantees that the CX-60 stands out from the crowd, and it is supremely elegant when viewed from any angle. Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy continues inside where the Japanese concept of ‘Ma’ – the calm and dignified beauty of empty space – is truly evident. Inside the spacious cabin, carefully curated materials like maple wood, high-quality leather, Japanese textiles and chrome detailing are combined in perfect harmony, with the highest levels of quality throughout. Initially launched with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, buyers of the new CX-60 can now opt for a Diesel powertrain for the very first time. The powerful 3.3-litre in-line 6-cylinder ‘e-SKYACTIV-D’ diesel engine is available with a choice of 2-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) and it benefits from the assistance of mild hybrid (MHEV) technology to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions to a mere 129g/km, with annual road tax costing just €210 as a result. The CX-60 SKYACTIV-D is powerful enough to pull a two-horse trailer thanks to it’s 2,500kg braked towing capacity, and buyers can specify an optional retractable tow-hitch if they so wish. When not in use, all you have to do is push the button in the boot and the tow-hitch completely disappears, quickly transitioning from recreational to everyday use.
Trim & Drivetrain Options.
Three generously-equipped trim grades are available in the CX-60 SKYACTIV-D: Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Takumi. Entry-level Prime-Line comes with 2-wheel drive as standard, with mid-spec Exclusive-Line available in 2WD or AWD, while top-spec Takumi comes with AWD as standard. The one thing that certainly sets the Mazda CX-60 apart from other large SUVs is its clean, uncluttered interior design. Featuring luxurious materials, along with outstanding build quality, the spacious cabin was created to enhance the feeling of oneness with the car. Nothing in the cabin is purely ornamental, as every element serves a purpose, and the result is a simple, bold and dignified cabin that puts the driver and passengers at ease. Using facial recognition technology to identify the driver (just like with modern smartphones), the car can recognise and automatically restore over 250 driver preferences, such as driving position, audio and climate control settings. Mazda Connect lets you easily sync your phone with the car and the My Mazda App connects you to your car even when you are not sitting in it. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ are on board as well so you can connect your smartphone and mirror your music, phone and app functions on the centre display. With Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-DRIVE), drivers have the ability to switch between five modes: Normal, Sport, Off-Road, Towing and EV, making the CX-60 an SUV you can depend on anywhere you go. Sophisticated vehicle stabilisation technology used in the CX-60 is unique to Mazda, giving drivers a better connection with the road. The body of the CX-60 adapts to different braking and lift forces for a more natural feel, particularly at high speeds, in tight corners or on rough surfaces. The CX-60 scored top marks with a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. The rating is based on rigorous independent crash testing and thorough analysis of the driver assistance systems, passive safety, and advanced active safety systems.
Test Car Details.
My Mazda CX-60 e-SKYACTIV-D Takumi test car was finished in delightful Platinum Quartz metallic paintwork with white Nappa leather upholstery an distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels. An outstanding array of comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features come as standard, with key highlights such as: body-colour wheel arch moulding, ambient lighting, driver monitor with personal identification, driver & passenger power seats, heated & ventilated front seats, rear seat heater, electric steering adjustment, BOSE sound system with 12 speakers, adaptive LED lights, rear privacy glass, 360-degree monitor with see-through view, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof, along with enhanced driver assistance systems, and a Driver Personalisation System that automatically calculates the best position for the driver based upon their height and eye position. The refined 3.3-litre diesel engine produces 254bhp and a hefty 550Nm of peak torque, resulting in a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 7.4-seconds. This engine is well suited to Mazda’s all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, which has been developed for better acceleration, lower emissions and a seamless driving experience. The cars’ relatively low centre of gravity, combined with a permanent all-wheel drive system incorporating shaft-driven transfer of torque between the axles, gives the car superior handling characteristics on a par with the best in the premium segment. The compliant and athletic chassis does a terrific job of keeping the large SUV in check during hard cornering. The steering is well weighted, and the overall feeling of agility belies the substantial size and weight of the CX-60. This really is a car you will want to drive forever.
