New MGS6 EV Offers More of What Matters in the Family-Friendly SUV Market Segment.
New MGS6 EV Offers More of What Matters.
Now, two decades after the Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor acquired the naming rights of the iconic MG brand, battery-powered MG’s are among the most sought-after affordable electric cars on the market. The MG brand has gone from being a rank outsider in the motor industry to being one of the hottest properties. In addition to its impressive range of electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, the new MGS6 EV is further proof of just how far the brand has come in a relatively-short period of time. Measuring in at 4,708mm in length, 1,912mm wide (excluding mirrors), and 1,672mm tall, the MGS6 really is a force to be reckoned with in terms of its commanding road presence.
Bespoke MSP Platform.
The MGS6 EV is built on MG’s cutting-edge Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) – first introduced with the multi-award-winning MG4 EV in 2021 – and it is the latest model to benefit from this advanced EV architecture. Like its smaller sibling, the MGS5, the new MGS6 was cleverly designed to stand out from the crowd, and its sharp, crisp styling makes it one of the most distinctive MG’s yet, while the dynamic shape of the car places it firmly in the mid-size family SUV class. With balanced styling and an aerodynamic front end that features a distinctive split grille, LED daytime running-lights (DRLs), and sleek LED headlights, the MGS6 exudes confidence from every angle.
Advanced MG Pilot Safety Tech.
The MG Pilot suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is the ultimate driving companion. Standard features include: Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition, Active Emergency Braking (with pedestrian & bicycle detection), Intelligent High Beam Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Emergency Lane Keeping, Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist, Forward & Rear Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Door Opening Warning.
Highly-Specified Trim Options.
The MGS6 EV Excite is the entry-level trim version, and it comes with integrated LED Daytime Running Lights, Full Auto LED headlights, LED rear lights, a 10.25-inch HD digital driver information display, a 12.8-inch HD infotainment touchscreen, 19-inch alloy wheels with aero covers, satellite navigation, wireless connection to Apple CarPlay™ & Android Auto™, MG Pilot, MG iSMART app connectivity, rear privacy glass, and silver roof rails, along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and infotainment features as standard. Key additional standard equipment in range-topping Exclusive trim includes: 20-inch alloy wheels, 360-degree parking camera, ventilated wireless mobile phone charger, electric tailgate, heated front seats & steering wheel, rear centre armrest, a head-up display, and an electric 6-way adjustable driver’s seat with electric lumbar support and memory function. The front passenger seat also comes with electric adjustment (4-way).
Drivetrain Options.
The rear-wheel drive MGS6 Excite and Exclusive ‘Long Range’ models offer a WLTP combined driving range of up to 530km on a single charge, and they feature power and torque figures of 244PS and 350Nm. The all-wheel drive MGS6 Exclusive ‘Long Range Dual Motor’ model increases power and torque figures to 361PS and 540Nm respectively, and its WLTP range reduces to 485km due to the extra weight of the all-wheel drive system. MG’s latest ultra-thin battery technology (now in its 3rd generation) provides better performance and an even longer lifespan, all while taking up less space, so there is more cabin room for everyone. With DC fast charging, you can charge the battery from 10-80% in around 38 minutes. With its 400V charging architecture, you can easily charge the MGS6 at speeds of up to 144kW. The estimated time for a 10-80% charge via a wallbox charger (7kW) is in the region of 8.5 hours.
Innovative iSMART App.
MG’s innovative iSMART system is designed to elevate the driving experience, delivering more ease and convenience to the car’s drivability. The iSMART system integrates car, internet and user communication, allowing occupants the power to operate many functions with hands-free voice control. The dedicated MG smartphone app helps you find your parked car, plan your next journey, and pick out nearby charging points enroute. Additionally, you can pre-start the climate control system to cool or heat the car before you step inside, while you can also check your battery status, and schedule your charging process.
Cabin & Boot.
The MGS6 feels genuinely upmarket inside, with a plentiful array of chrome-effect elements on the dash and around the centre console. The 12.8-inch central touchscreen comes with all of the usual features, including wireless Apple CarPlay, and is intuitive in its operation, with sharp graphics that are easy to read. Thankfully, there are physical buttons beneath the infotainment screen for the volume control, temperature control, and hazard warning lights, with a voice control button located on the multi-function steering wheel. There is a large digital driver information display behind the steering wheel, with variable view layouts that show speed and other important data. The centre console-mounted rotary gear selector is ideally located within close proximity to the driver, and it is very easy to get used to. A ventilated wireless charging pad is situated to the left hand side of the rotary dial, with 2 cup-holders located close by. The tech-forward cabin features front and rear centre armrests, and overall build quality represents a noticeable step up from previous MG models, with ample soft-touch materials used where it matters most. The MGS6 is genuinely built for life – school runs, road trips, and everything in between. The boot has a generous capacity of 674 litres with all five seats in place, expanding to a huge 1,910 litre capacity with the rear seats folded. Additional space can be found in the front boot, proving itself to be the ideal storage location for the charging cables when not in use. A generous 2,835mm wheelbase ensures a genuinely roomy five-seat cabin.
Test Car.
My test car was an MGS6 Exclusive ‘Long Range’, which was finished in Satin Gold metallic paint with standard 20-inch ‘Gulfstream Style’ alloy wheels with low wind-resistance aero covers. The car’s electric motor is located on the rear axle, and is powered by a 77kWh NCM battery. With 244PS (241bhp) and 350Nm of torque on offer, the car can complete a 0-100km/h sprint in just 7.3-seconds, with power sent to the rear wheels in a well-controlled manner. With a turning circle of just 11.1-metres, the car is easy to manoeuvre around city streets, and parking it into a tight space is a simple task too. Thanks to the utilisation of precision steering, it is easy to place the car exactly where you want it to be on the road. The car is surprisingly nimble through tight corners, while motorway driving is a pleasurable experience too, as the car pulls away quickly and smoothly, getting you up to cruising speed with ease. There are multiple steering and drive mode settings in the menus, so selecting the right one is never an issue. The MGS6’s driving dynamics are truly impressive, and its excellent ride and handling balance adds greatly to the overall driving pleasure. The five-link rear suspension provides superior stability over bumps, whilst absorbing nasty shocks to improve driving comfort. This, coupled with the minimal body roll helps the MGS6 feel responsive and stable on even the most challenging roads. The car remains smooth and agile at all times, and the four-setting regenerative braking system can operate in ‘One Pedal Driving Mode’ if the driver so chooses. In terms of overall drivability, the MGS6 is genuinely one of the best EVs I have tested this year so far.
