New Nissan Ariya NISMO e-4ORCE has Dynamic Agility.
Nissan Ariya Nismo has Dynamic Agility.
Nissan beat its rivals to market with the LEAF electric hatchback when it was launched in 2010, with the brand becoming an electric pioneer in the process. The Ariya is Nissan’s second full EV model for Europe, and the futuristically-styled electric SUV sets new standards for quality, drivability and technology for the brand. Underneath the sleek, coupé SUV-style body sits the Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-EV platform, which is shared with the Renault Mégane E-Tech family crossover. However, at 4,595mm long, the Ariya is bigger than its French relative, and its 2,775mm wheelbase results in generous space for up to five adult occupants.
High-Performance Crossover.
The Ariya NISMO is a high-performance electric crossover developed by Nissan’s motorsport division, featuring a remarkable 429hp and 600Nm of torque. It enhances the standard Ariya with aerodynamic styling, and a specialised NISMO driving mode for increased throttle response, along with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive technology. The exclusive aerodynamic bodywork is designed for increased downforce during spirited driving, and it gives the car a dynamic appearance, while 20-inch ENKEI alloy wheels come as standard, and are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres for enhanced traction and road-holding ability. The NISMO-tuned suspension set-up includes specialised springs, stabilisers, and shock absorbers in order to improve stability and control through corners. The Ariya NISMO comes with an 87kWh (usable) battery, providing a WLTP driving range of up to 419kms when fully charged. With e-4ORCE all-wheel drive technology, torque and braking are controlled for each wheel individually, prioritising those with the most grip to reduce the effects of over- and under-steer.
Sporty Cabin.
Uniquely trimmed in high grip synthetic suede, the Ariya NISMO’s seat materials improve body holding performance, adding greater support when cornering. With electric adjustment and heated seats, both driver and passenger can enjoy the perfect personal setting. NISMO’s design presence continues throughout the interior, with red accents across the centre console, red ambient lighting, and unique infographics via the driver meter display. A motorsport-inspired steering wheel, with a red centre mark and red stitching, adds a premium finish with sporty intent. Instead of traditional dials to operate the heating and ventilation functions, Nissan has used a row of intuitive haptic controls set into the dash below the 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The twin screens are large and clear, while the speed when responding to touch commands is impressive. The map display is also bright and clear, and the system comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. The Ariya’s hands-free powered tailgate opens to reveal a boot capacity of 415-litres, while there is extra storage space underneath the boot floor. The movable boot floor is in two parts, and can be placed vertically to divide the boot into different sections for easy transportation of the weekly grocery shopping, and the likes.
Test Car Details.
My test car was an Ariya NISMO e-4ORCE, which was finished in Stealth Grey Metallic paintwork with a black roof and gloss black lower trim elements. The ‘NISMO Red’ accent line and Formula E-inspired rear fog light add further visual cues to the Ariya’s NISMO heritage. The aero-optimised air curtain, front splitter, and vortices-generator combine to reduce drag and aid stability for increased driver engagement. Taking inspiration from Nissan’s racing car heritage, the ducktail rear spoiler adds style with substance, reducing lift and increasing rigidity across the tailgate. The aerodynamic focus continues with a twin-layered double diffuser that adds downforce and stability at higher speeds on the motorway, while the revised suspension set-up and bespoke ENKEI 20” alloy wheels add a purposeful stance. Press the accelerator pedal and the seemingly-limitless power and instant torque on offer ensure that the car is propelled effortlessly, and with remarkable poise. With a new 40:60 rear-bias, the e-4ORCE system delivers greater driving dynamics, improved traction, and challenging-weather performance to help maximise driving confidence. The car can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.0 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 200km/h (where permitted). The low-set dashboard allows for excellent visibility, while the combination of a 360-degree camera, parking sensors, moving object detection and emergency braking take the strain out of reversing. When connected to a 130kW fast charger for 30-minutes, the battery can gain enough energy for up to 300kms of additional range, while a full charge (0-100%) at home can be completed in about 13.5 hours via a 7.4kW wallbox charger.
Verdict & Price.
The amazing Nissan Ariya NISMO e-4ORCE stands out in terms of its thrilling driving dynamics, distinctly-sporty exterior styling, gorgeous cabin, supreme refinement, and cutting-edge EV technology, while the spaciousness within the five-seat SUV is also highly commendable. Pricing starts from €68,495 (excluding dealer delivery & related charges).
