Impressive Skoda Scala is still modern and relevant.

The Skoda Scala is a C-segment compact hatchback that sits between the Fabia and Octavia in the Czech automakers non-SUV model lineup, and it has a very similar appearance and proportions to the Skoda Rapid hatchback, which was manufactured between 2012 and 2019. The Scala is based on a stretched version of the VW Group’s MQB A0 platform that underpins current iterations of the VW Polo and SEAT Ibiza, as well as the VW T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq and Skoda Fabia.

Refreshed Inside & Out.

First launched in Ireland in late 2019, the Scala received a mid-life facelift for the 2024 model year, and now two years later, it still looks modern and relevant. The revised Scala features redesigned front and rear fascias with the availability of matrix LED headlights, sportier exterior design elements, new exterior colours and new alloy wheel designs. The cabin features a redesigned control panel used to operate the heating and ventilation system, enhanced levels of standard equipment, and extra Simply Clever features borrowed from other Skoda models, as well additional recycled materials for the seats and door trims. In conjunction with the mid-life facelift, Skoda removed diesel engines from the Scala’s powertrain options, with turbocharged petrol power now being the only choice for buyers.

Trim & Transmission Options.

The spacious family hatchback features a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with the option of 95PS or 115PS. The 95PS version uses a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 115PS option is paired with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The lower powered engine is available in Essence, Selection or Selection + trim grades, with the larger unit dropping the entry-level Essence trim, but adding range-topping Monte Carlo trim to the lineup.

Perfectly Balanced Proportions.

As we have come to expect from Skoda, the Scala’s exterior design is graceful, handsome, crisp and thoroughly modern too, and buyers can choose from a variety of optional extras (and packs) if they want to achieve ultimate personalisation. The perfectly balanced proportions of the Scala conceal a well-designed boot with a capacity of 467-litres with the rear seats in place, and up to 1,410-litres with the rear seats folded down.

Spacious & Comfortable Cabin.

The modern cabin in the Scala features well-arranged displays that are easy to use, along with masses of space for the driver and front seat passenger, and impressive rear seat passenger space too. The Scala features an advanced digital cockpit and an intuitive free-standing central touchscreen with sharp graphics. All of the important driver information and infotainment details are relayed onto the displays, and the minimalist lines and ambient lighting provide the finishing touches to the elegant on-board atmosphere.

Test Car.

My test car was a Scala Selection + 1.0-litre TSI 6-speed manual 115PS, which was finished in Black Magic pearlescent paintwork with ‘Suite’ leather-design upholstery and standard 17-inch bi-tone alloy wheels. Additional standard Selection + equipment includes front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera, ambient lighting, LED headlamps, LED rear combination lamps with dynamic turn signals, leather multi-function steering wheel, heated front seats, electric driver’s seat, multiple airbags, “Jumbo Box” centre armrest, DAB audio, Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and a host of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and connectivity features. The petrol engine in my test car produces 115PS (116hp)  and 200Nm of torque, providing the car with enough forward motion to sprint from 0-100km/h in 9.5-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 202km/h (where permitted). With claimed fuel consumption as low as 5.1l/100km (55.4mpg) on a WLTP combined driving cycle, and annual road tax of just €200, the Scala 1.0-litre TSI should prove to be a sound financial proposition for families or individuals alike. The engine is refined, and the slick six-speed manual transmission is a joy to use. The steering is pleasingly light and responds in a precise fashion to driver inputs, and there is a solid and dependable feel to the brake pedal. The Scala‘s supple ride quality ensures that everyone onboard can enjoy excellent levels of comfort, while its handling characteristics are mature and satisfyingly predictable. Essentially, the Scala is a very competent all-rounder.

Verdict, Pricing & Warranty.

The Skoda Scala is a very likeable and genuinely appealing family hatchback that offers excellent levels of cabin & boot space, impressive standard specification, terrific practicality, and latest-generation infotainment & connectivity tech, along with a sleek & attractive exterior design. The Scala is priced from €26,775 for the 1.0-litre TSI 95PS Essence model, with my test car specification priced from €32,550. A 3-year/150,000km manufacturer’s warranty comes as standard.
