Philippines joins Women’s World Car of the Year.

Womens World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) has announced that Genevieve Tiu, journalist and video producer at CarGuide.PH, and contributing writer to The Philippine STAR Wheels has been appointed to the WWCOTY jury. With the addition of Tiu, the WWCOTYs panel now consists of 64 female automotive journalists from 47 countries. WWCOTY aims to recognize the best cars of each year, while also giving a voice to women in the automotive world.

This is the first time that Philippines has been represented on the prestigious jury.

Gen has been immersed in the automotive world largely through business, having grown up in a company that is involved in the automotive aftermarket industry. Through this, her experience extends from business development and collaborations with car manufacturers, PR and communications, media relations, and, of course, to her work as a motoring journalist.

Being part of the motoring media has opened up new experiences, opportunities, and doors. It allowed her to pursue her passion for writing and cars, as well as build a network within the local industry.

Currently, Gen writes and produces for CarGuide.PH, an independent Philippine automotive website that has become one of the leading authorities on automotive news and car reviews. The website actively engages with the community on a range of topics covering the industry and other related categories. At the time of this release, it is also the only Philippine-based online automotive publication with a full-time female writer on the team.

Gen is also a columnist, under her column, “Drive and Doodles,” for The Philippine STAR Wheels, the motoring section for one of the Top 3 broadsheets in the Philippines. The bi-weekly motoring section is considered one of the most active print-based publications that covers local and global motoring news for both automotive and motorcycles, local event coverage, and extensive features.

Both CarGuide.PH and The Philippine STAR Wheels provide valuable insights into the latest trends and developments in the Philippine automotive market, helping consumers, industry professionals, and stakeholders stay up-to-date on industry news and opportunities.

About The Philippines
The automotive industry in the Philippines has evolved considerably in the last decade. It has always been a country with an affinity for mainstream Japanese car brands, with Toyota leading the industry at a 49.38% market share, as of 2022; and a preference toward sedans.

However, in recent years, commercial vehicles such as SUVs, MPVs, and pickup trucks have taken over as consumers opt for larger and higher vehicles to account for prevailing road conditions. The Philippines is also seeing the entry of more Chinese car brands, starting with Geely, and now Chery Automobile and even GAC Motors introducing passenger vehicles.

Most recently, thanks to favorable legislation, there is a slow, but steady entry of more hybrid and electric vehicles in the country from mainstream and luxury car brands.

About Women’s World Car of the Year
Women’s World Car of the Year is the only car awards group in the world comprised exclusively of women motoring journalists. It was created by New Zealand motoring journalist Sandy Myhre in 2009. She is Honorary President while Marta García is Executive President.

This unique award aims to recognise the best cars of the year and to give a voice to women in the automotive world. The voting criteria are based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. The jurors do not select a ‘woman’s car’ because cars are not gender specific. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are considered when casting the votes.

However, beyond choosing the best cars of the year, our goal is also to give visibility to women in the automotive world and to contribute to making women’s voices heard on all continents because mobility for a woman means access to many personal and professional possibilities.
