Sporty Hyundai Tucson N Line Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) powers in.
Sporty Hyundai Tucson N Line powers in.
When the fourth-generation Hyundai Tucson was launched in Ireland in 2021 it brought with it a dynamic new look, as well as new powertrain technology. The all-new model featured Hyundai’s “jewel-like” front grille, with geometric daytime running lights integrated in its design, along with bulging front and rear body panels, angled wheel wells and relatively short overhangs that made it stand out from its competitors in the hugely-competitive compact SUV market. The facelift version of the fourth-generation Tucson is now available in Ireland, and it brings with it an enhanced cutting-edge design, reinvented interior and state-of-the-art smart technology.
Refreshed Design.
The Tucson’s refreshed design is taking modern aesthetics to the next level, and it features a new 3-stack Parametric Hidden Light design, new bumpers and skid plates that extend seamlessly from side to side for a more dynamic stance, and redesigned alloy wheels that accentuate the progressive look even further. The redesigned front grille features a dynamic interplay of thin, angular lines, creating a visually wider stance when viewed head-on. New laser cutting technology gives the LED daytime running lights a brighter, more upscale look that provides a unique, eye-catching presence on the road, while the redesigned rear bumper features a larger skid plate than its predecessor, conveying a sense of stability. The dynamically-sweeping LED rear lights also feature Hyundai’s ingenious Parametric Hidden Light technology, and they provide the rear of the car with terrific visual drama. The Tucson’s tailgate is crowned by a smooth glass Hyundai logo, which is now seamlessly integrated into the rear window, in a departure from traditional car emblems. Additionally, the rear wiper blade length has been increased to 350mm, so you can enjoy a clear view through a wider area when driving in the rain or snow.
Advanced Infotainment Tech.
The interior of the fourth-generation Tucson possessed a feeling of openness and comfort that exceeded all expectation, and that hasn’t changed for the facelift model. However, the cabin has been redesigned to integrate an impressive new range of screens and advanced technology elements. Upon sitting in the multi-adjustable driver’s seat, you are greeted by a new three-spoke steering wheel that offers optimal grip. The new dashboard, with its horizontal flow and open storage tray exudes a perfect blend of function and style, and it flows into the door trim on both sides to increase the sense of roominess. The revamped centre console features a new-style armrest, cup holders and a very useful wireless charging pad for your smartphone. No matter where they choose to sit in the new Tucson, all occupants will enjoy generous leg and head room, while the standard boot capacity of up to 620 litres (powertrain dependent) can be expanded to as much as 1,799 litres with the rear seats folded.
Upgraded Connectivity.
Upgraded connectivity features in the refreshed Tucson deliver an immersive driving experience that seamlessly integrates technology and style. The fully-digital 12.3” cluster displays essential information to the driver, and the 12.3” centre touchscreen provides easy access to all connectivity and infotainment features. Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ let you mirror your apps, music and phone layout onto the big screen. The 6.6” climate control touchscreen simplifies the process of adjusting heating and cooling settings for a more intuitive user experience, while Bluelink delivers seamless connectivity and clever features to make your drive more convenient.
Impressive Power Output.
The N Line trim grade in the refreshed Hyundai Tucson PHEV sits at the top of the model range, and it is powered by a 1.6-litre T-GDi petrol engine in union with a 72kW electric motor for a combined power output of 252PS (248bhp) and an official electric range of up to 63km. The Tucson PHEV is also available in Comfort Plus, Executive, and Executive Plus trim grades. All Tucson PHEV trim grades come with the reassurance of All-Wheel Drive and a six-speed automatic transmission as standard.
Inspired By Motorsport.
The motorsport-inspired N Line trim is the most dynamic model in the new Tucson PHEV model line-up. Sporty handling comes courtesy of optional Electronically Controlled Suspension which controls the damping force on each individual wheel, reducing roll, pitch and vertical motion to enhance ride quality and control. Drivers can choose between Sport and Eco drive modes to suit their individual preference or driving style. Sport mode has been sharpened in order to offer more control and feedback over the entire speed range, while Eco mode delivers top fuel efficiency with modified acceleration, shift points and air-conditioning. Taking design cues from the motorsport world of Hyundai N, the twin tip muffler exhausts harmonise with the new glossy black upper bumper line and the winglet shapes, while the glossy black frame around the side windows generates a race track-inspired feeling of forward motion as then graphic flows through the profile to the dynamic rear end. The sporty N Line seats, door trim and armrest feature red contrast stitching, as does the new three-spoke N Line steering wheel, which is finished in fine leather with sporty metallic accents and an ‘N’ logo. The Tucson N Line also features sporty metal foot pedals with a brushed metal finish and slip-resistant rubber pads for more control. With its advanced driver-assistance systems and an active safety package with a range of innovative features, the Tucson N Line PHEV delivers even more peace-of-mind. The Crosswind Stability Control system actively controls lane departures caused by strong crosswinds to maintain existing driving direction and ensure stability. Additional key safety systems include 7 airbags, a Surround View Monitor, Parking Distance Warning (forward, side and reverse), Blind-Spot View Monitor, Safe Exit Warning, and eCall, which automatically calls emergency services if you are in an accident and the airbags deploy. A host of additional safety systems also come as standard for enhanced occupant safety on every journey.
Test Car Details.
My test car was a Tucson PHEV N Line, which was finished in stylish Ecotronic Grey Pearl paintwork with Obsidian Black textile suede and leather upholstery, and exclusive 19-inch alloy wheels. With 252PS and 304Nm of torque on offer from its petrol/electric hybrid powertrain, the Tucson PHEV N Line can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 8.5-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 187km/h (where permitted). The steering is light but accurate, with an impressive suspension set-up proving more than capable of soaking up broken road surfaces with ease, while still maintaining control and stability through corners. The increasing influence of ex-BMW M-Division boss Albert Biermann over Hyundai’s chassis tuning is evident in the new Tucson, leading to excellent rolling refinement and terrific driving dynamics. The comfort within the Tucson’s cabin is impressive, and I found it easy to find a perfect driving position behind the sporty N Line steering wheel. Driving through urban areas is a simple exercise in the Tucson PHEV, and it feels equally at ease at motorway speeds too. There are off-road driving modes for drivers who want to wander off the beaten track, and these manage the delivery of power to the wheels in a way that suits the weather and road conditions.
