New Smart #3 BRABUS Delivers Unbelievable Pace.

New Smart #3 Brabus Delivers Unbelievable Pace.

Following hot on the heels of the Smart #1 compact SUV comes the recently-introduced Smart #3, which also finds itself in the category of compact SUV, albeit with more space. The #3 is the second product of a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese car maker Geely Holding Group, with Smart #5 and #6 models due to be launched in 2025 and 2026 respectively. The #3 is closely related to the #1, and it sits on the same underpinnings, has a near-enough identical cabin, and it uses the same line-up of batteries and electric motors. When compared to the #1in terms of exterior dimensions, the #3 is 130mm longer and has a sleeker, coupe-like roofline, whereas the #1 is taller by 80mm and is shaped more like a conventional SUV.

Brabus Performance Model.

There are five distinct trim levels available, starting with the entry level Pro trim, which comes with a 47kWh battery that provides a range of up to 325km. The Pro + trim comes with a larger 66kWh battery pack which increases the range to 435km, while Premium trim can achieve up to 455kms from a fully charged battery. For a limited time only, the Smart #3 is available in 25th Anniversary Edition trim, and it is also capable of up to 455kms from a full battery. All of the above trim versions have a 268bhp electric motor driving the rear wheels, with 0-100km/h taking just 5.8 seconds. The flagship version of the Smart #3 is the riotous Brabus performance model, which adds a second electric motor to the front wheels, and this hikes the power output to 422bhp. As a result, the 0-100km/h sprint can be completed in an eye-watering 3.7 seconds. While the Smart #1 has an upright SUV body style, the #3 has a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape, so it can travel marginally further between charges and, as with the #1, you can tow a braked tailer up to 1600kg with any version of the #3, which is quite impressive. All #3 models with the larger battery can currently charge at up to 150kW, which means a 10 to 80 per-cent top-up in less than 30 minutes, with the smaller battery capable of charging at up to 130kW. The Smart #3 uses the versatile Geely ‘Sustainable Engineering Architecture’ (SEA) platform which underpins the body, and this platform is shared with the new Volvo EX30.

Minimum Drag, Optimum Efficiency.

The exterior design of the #3 has a definite European influence, with the V-shaped headlights, and tail-lights that are connected by a light bar which resembles the Mercedes-Benz EQ models. As with the #1, the #3 features plenty of aerodynamic enhancements, such as the part closed-off wheels and flush door handles. Other than that, the exterior of the #3 features rounded shapes, frameless windows and up-swept sills which minimise drag and optimise efficiency. For the Brabus model, sportier touches are added to the exterior, with larger 20-inch alloy wheels, and red brake calipers, along with a suspension upgrade to cope with the immense power from the electric motors.

Spacious Cabin & Boot.

The interior of the #3 is spacious, bright and airy, with a multi-adjustable seating position and a large fixed glass roof that floods the cabin with light. The car offers a pleasant and usable interior with plenty of headroom for both front and rear passengers. Headroom in the rear of the car is better than you might think for an SUV with a rakish roofline, and legroom is generous too, thanks to the extra 35mm between the front and rear wheels compared to the #1. Fabrics and other materials used are of high quality, and the car feels nicely put together. Storage is good, with a chilled central cubby, and under-console storage, as well as cup holders, phone tray (with charge pad) and a glasses holder in the roof. Plus, the phone tray and cup holders can be closed when not in use, which is nice for both a tidy aesthetic, as well as security. The relatively low dashboard and slim A pillars help aid forward visibility, while the clean, uncluttered aesthetic makes the interior feel fresh and modern. As with most modern EVs, many of the conventional controls have been transferred to the central touchscreen, and this is joined by a digital driver display that is clear and legible. The infotainment system is user-friendly and fairly responsive too. The boot has a capacity of 370-litres, with a 15-litre frunk (front trunk) under the bonnet for storing the charging cables.

Brabus Test Car.

My test car was a Smart #3 Brabus with dual electric motors which produce 422bhp and 543Nm of instant torque. The #3 is very well equipped across all trim levels, with occupant safety featuring high on its priority list. Standard safety features include Automatic High Beam Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Emergency Brake Assist and Emergency Lane keep Assist to mention a few. The car feels every bit as quick as the incredible 0-100km/h time suggests, with excellent linear surge right from the off. The steering is well balanced with a natural response, and the motor is fairly quiet, while the regenerative braking function provides an even greater braking force to the well-judged brake pedal when selected. You can adjust the amount of regenerative force and even opt for a one-pedal mode if desired. There is absolutely no shortage of power for motorway driving, and stop-start city driving is manageable in terms of both power and delivery. The car’s 182mm ride height affords a comfortable and easy ride, even over poor surfaces. In addition to the host of standard equipment in Premium trim, the #3 Brabus comes with exclusive features such as: Alcantara sports-style steering wheel, Brabus Drive Mode with simulated engine sound, Brabus body styling, microfibre suede seats, slidable rear seat, sport-style foot pedals, and ventilated driver & passenger seats.

Verdict & Price.

Smart and Brabus go way back, thanks to Smart’s parent company Mercedes-Benz’ long-running involvement with the German tuning specialist.  The new Smart #3 Brabus blends supercar performance with impressive efficiency in a sleek SUV body style that is practical, versatile and family-friendly. The Smart #3 Brabus was recently awarded the prestigious title of ‘Irish Performance Car of the Year 2025’ by a panel of MMAI jurors in association with Continental Tyres. It really is that good!. Pricing for the Smart #3 starts at €38,714 (after subsidies) with the mighty Brabus version priced at €56,500 (after subsidies). A 3-year warranty comes as standard, as does an 8-year battery warranty (T’s & C’s apply). Visit www.smartelectric.ie for further information.
