Supporting its ambition to help more people make the switch to fully electric cars, Volvo Cars has unveiled a single electric motor variant of its pure electric Volvo XC40 Recharge compact SUV.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge with single motor, powering the front wheels, expands the company’s range of electric models and further paves the way towards the company’s ambition of selling only fully electric cars by 2030. Volvo Cars will reveal a whole family of new, pure electric cars in the coming years.

The new single-motor XC40 Recharge is the second electric-only XC40 variant, joining the dual-motor XC40 Recharge Twin. It delivers 231 horsepower from a 69-kWh battery and an anticipated range of around 400 km on a single charge under the WLTP drive cycle. The battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent of capacity in approximately 32 minutes on a fast-charging system.

“With the addition of a single-motor XC40 Recharge, we broaden the appeal of our fully electric line-up,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer. “Customers can now choose between two distinct variants of XC40 Recharge, as well as the recently launched Volvo C40 Recharge.”

Both variants of the XC40 Recharge have undergone a variety of changes to the software and drivetrain since the initial introduction last year, improving efficiency and range. This means customers get a responsive and powerful powertrain, with a well-balanced performance for all types of driving. These changes will also be rolled out to existing XC40 Recharge customers via over-the-air updates.

The new single motor XC40 Recharge is available to order in Ireland and, like all pure electric Volvo models, will be available for ordering online via volvocars.ie as part of Volvo Cars’ new commercial strategy.

The single motor XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is available from €50,508, and like its predecessor comes with a Care Offer to include Service, Roadside Assistance, Warranty, and a €500 Insurance Contribution*, included in the price. It is also eligible for the SEAI grant of €5,000 so the cost to the customer starts at €45,508.

Both pure electric variants of the Volvo XC40 Recharge are based on the best-selling XC40 small premium SUV, the first Volvo model to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award and Irish car of the year in 2019

The XC40 Recharge offers customers a brand new infotainment system powered by the Android operating system. The new, intuitive system offers customers unprecedented personalisation and new embedded Google technology and services, such as Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play.

The car also receives larger software and operating system updates over the air, placing Volvo Cars at the forefront of automotive connected services.

The XC40 Recharge will keep evolving and improving over time, rather than being at its peak when it leaves the factory.

The new single-motor XC40 Recharge will go into production this fall and will be built at the Volvo Cars manufacturing plants in Ghent, Belgium and Luqiao, China.
