What Car? reveals shortlist of models battling for 2021 Car of the Year title.

What Car?, Britain’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, has revealed the shortlist of 31 models in contention for its prestigious 2021 Car of the Year title.

The winner will be announced on Thursday 14 January at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards, held in association with ALA Insurance.

To be eligible, a car has to have gone on sale in the last year and been tested back to back with rivals, both on UK roads and at What Car?’s dedicated test track.

In addition to the overall Car of the Year, What Car? will name the best models on sale in 26 vehicle categories, ranging from Small electric car to Performance car, and Family car to Luxury SUV.

To make the 2021 event more useful than ever to Britain’s car buyers, each category will feature not only a winner, but also a series of best buys for individual qualities such as value, comfort and practicality.

The qualities chosen for each category are based on the results of What Car?’s 2020 reader survey, where people were asked what they most valued when choosing their current car.

What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The 2021 shortlist is as long as last year’s, despite the problems caused by Covid-19, proving that it hasn’t stopped manufacturers launching great cars.

“January, February and March are the peak months for car buying in the UK, and as ever our awards will give consumers the clarity they need.”

The 2021 Car of the Year Awards winners will be announced across a week-long, entirely digital event, which kicks off on 11 January.

The What Car? Awards have been running since 1978, but have been reimagined as a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, with a greater emphasis than ever on reaching a large, highly engaged consumer audience and ensuring that they are the most influential car-buying awards in the calendar.
