New IONIQ 6 EV offers Elegant Efficiency.

New IONIQ 6 EV offers Elegant Efficiency.

Following on from the multi award-winning IONIQ 5 EV, the all-new IONIQ 6 EV promises to be an even more impressive offering from Hyundai. With its sleek and unmistakably unique styling, the new IONIQ 6 is the silhouette of the new era of electric mobility. Its streamliner design and cocoon-like interior have been created to provide occupants with a personalised and flexible space that is redefining the in-car experience.

Distinctive & Sustainable.

The exterior design of the IONIQ 6 (4-door only) bears no resemblance what-so-ever to its IONIQ 5 (5-door only) sibling, but it is possible to notice some similarities between the two car on the road. However, while the IONIQ 5 does have excellent road manners, the IONIQ 6 achieves another level of refinement. There is little in the way of road or wind noise to worry about, and the electric motor is well muted too. The elliptical wing-inspired rear spoiler is shaped with glass-like, transparent materials that highlight its unique LED lighting signature. The new EV platform that underpins the IONIQ 6 has enabled designers to stretch the interior for optimised legroom and spaciousness, and the Ambient Mood Light harmonises with the transparent cabin materials for a relaxed and comfortable vibe that can be changed to suit your mood. The interior features eco-process leather, recycled PET fabric and recycled fishing net carpet, as well as raw materials extracted from sugar cane.

Trim & Drivetrain Options.

The IONIQ 6 is available in Signature and Elegance trim in Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) guise, with a range-topping Finesse trim available in conjunction with an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) drivetrain. The entry-level Signature trim is available with a choice of 53kW or 77.4kW battery, with Elegance and Finesse trims only available with the larger power unit. The 53kW battery feeds a single electric motor which produces 151PS (149bhp), while the 77.4kW battery in Signature and Elegance trim variants supplies power to a single electric motor with 229PS (226bhp) on offer. In Finesse trim, the 77.4kW battery feeds two electric motors (one on each axle) for a total power output of 326PS (322bhp). The official WLTP range for the 53kW battery is 429km, and for the 77.4kW unit in RWD guise it is an impressive 614km, with the AWD version capable of up to 519km between charges.

Innovative Battery System.

The IONIQ 6 is equipped with an innovative 800V battery system for some of the fastest charging times possible, and it is also compatible for 400V charging, and AC charging. This 400V and 800V charging technology provides drivers with the flexibility of using a different charger is one type is occupied. The powerful 11kW on-board charger provides plenty of flexibility for normal (AC) charging, be it at home on an overnight charge, or at a local street-side public charger. The 53kWh and 77.4kWh batteries can both be charged from 10-80% at a 350kW fast charger in just 18 minutes, while a 10-80% charge at a 50kW fast charger will take 58 minutes and 73 minutes respectively. A clever V2L (vehicle-to-load) function lets you power domestic devices from your car, and there is even a full three-pin socket located beside the rear seat bench.

Spacious & Comfortable Cabin.

Boasting a wheelbase of almost 3-metres, the upmarket cabin of the IONIQ 6 is a spacious and comfortable place to be. There is ample legroom for five adults, but headroom is somewhat restricted due to the sleek shape of the roof. Even so, this is a seriously roomy car throughout. The 401-litre boot is accessed via a wide aperture, and a ‘wet box’ trunk under the bonnet is the ideal location to store the charging cables out of harm’s way. For occasions when more cargo space is required, the rear seats can be folded down individually.

Test Car Details.

My IONIQ 6 Elegance 77.4kW test car was finished in striking Ultimate Red metallic paintwork, with aero-optimised alloy wheels that harmonise beautifully with the car’s sleek profile. In addition to the impressive level of standard equipment in Signature trim, the extra features in Elegance trim include: leather upholstery, auto flush door handles, trailer package, remote smart parking assist, BOSE speaker system, LED projection + adaptive driving beam, ambient mood lighting, surround view monitor, blind spot collision avoidance, forward collision avoidance 2, highway driver assist 2, memory seat configuration, premium relaxation seats, blind spot view monitor, park collision avoidance assist (forward and reverse), rear privacy glass, heated rear seats, ventilation seats (front), head-up display, electro chromatic rear view mirror, and a high gloss side body beltline. The car delivers instant torque with impressive progression, and it can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.4-seconds, on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 185km/h. The elegant rotary type gear selector is located on the steering column, and it is quick and intuitive to use. Drivers can adjust the level of regenerative braking with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel – using the motor to slow the car and charge the battery at the same time. The low centre of gravity in the IONIQ 6 is harnessed by a well-judged suspension set-up that delivers excellent body control and pin-sharp reactions to steering inputs. Driving around tight and flowing bends on a back road is a pleasure, as the steering provides the driver with honest feedback in an accurate and engaging fashion. Drivers can choose from three drive modes: Eco, Normal and Sport, each of which preform their duty with great precision.
