The big-selling, multi award-winning MG5 EV estate car has been given a surprisingly substantial update in order to provide buyers with even more for their money. The fact that the car comes exclusively with a fully-electric powertrain makes the new MG5 even more appealing to motorists looking to make the move to an EV (Electric Vehicle). The brand says the MG5’s estate body style offers superior aerodynamics and better handling, which is ideal for drivers who value maximum driving efficiency, spaciousness and driving dynamics. The relatively low stance of the MG5, with its water-cooled battery pack integrated into the car’s chassis, provides the car with an extremely low centre of gravity.
Updated Exterior & Interior.
The new MG5 features significant styling updates, with a redesigned front and rear, enhanced LED headlights as standard, new 16’’ (Excite) and 17’’ (Exclusive) alloy wheel designs and two new exterior colours. Interior design and technology enhancements include a 10.25’’ widescreen infotainment system with upgraded software, now capable of supporting iSMART connected car functionality through MG’s dedicated smartphone app. The new MG5 EV can now tow up to 500kg and is also equipped with Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) capability, which means you can use the car’s battery to power pretty much any electrical device.
Long Range Battery.
The MG5 is powered by a 156bhp (115kW) electric motor with 260Nm of torque that drives the front wheels, enabling the car to sprint from 0-100km/h sprint in just 7.7-seconds, on its way to a top speed of 185km/h (where permitted). With the 61.1kWh Long Range battery fitted to the MG5, the electric driving range now stands at an impressive 403kms, with regenerative braking (with three different levels) proving itself to be a valuable resource in getting the most out of the available range. The battery can be fast-charged at speeds of up to 87kW, allowing for a 10-80 percent charge in 35 minutes, while a full charge from a domestic wallbox charger can be completed in around nine and a half hours. In terms of safety, the MG5 benefits from a suite of safety systems under the title MG Pilot, which includes Active Emergency Braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Intelligent High Beam Assist as standard.
Excite & Exclusive Variants.
The new MG5 is available with a choice of two trim variants – Excite and Exclusive – with both variants sharing the same spacious cabin and cargo area. The boot offers 464-litres of space behind the rear seats (up to the load cover), and this increases to 578-litres when the load cover is removed. However, when the rear seat backs are folded, the available load space increases to a substantial 1,367-litres. Key standard equipment in entry-level Excite trim includes MG Pilot driver assistance technology, 10.25” colour touchscreen, DAB radio, Android Auto™/ Apple CarPlay™ compatibility, Bluetooth, rear parking camera, rear parking sensors, satellite navigation, three regenerative braking modes, three driving modes, rotary gear selector, Smart Keyless Entry with push button start/stop, air-conditioning with odour filter, leather multi-function steering wheel, 7” colour driver information display, 4 x USB ports, and 16” alloy wheels with aero covers. Addition standard equipment in range-topping Exclusive trim includes leather-style upholstery, heated front seats, electric driver’s 6-way adjustable seat with lumbar support, automatic air-conditioning, electrically-adjustable door mirrors (heated & folding), rain sensing wipers, 360-degree parking camera, rear privacy glass, and 17” alloy wheels. There are six colours to choose from in the new MG5 – Arctic White (non-metallic), Electric Blue (metallic), Cosmic Silver (metallic), Charcoal Grey (metallic), Black Pearl (metallic) and Dynamic Red (tri-coat paint), with metallic and tri-coat paint finishes priced at €700 and €900 respectively.
Test Car Details.
My test car was an MG5 EV Exclusive Long Range which was finished in striking Dynamic Red tri-coat metallic paintwork. As is the norm with electric cars, there is the usual instant acceleration from the moment the accelerator pedal is pressed, and this makes the car easy to drive around town, while there is enough power available for building speed quickly when joining a motorway too. The steering is pleasingly direct, with a light feel that makes it easy to negotiate narrow streets, and is well suited to the car’s smooth and predictable power delivery. There are three driving modes to choose from (Eco, Normal and Sport), and careful use of the Eco mode will ensure enhanced efficiency. MG’s engineers have put an emphasis on comfort, and the compliant suspension does a great job of ensuring the car remains composed when traversing rutted road surfaces and imperfections. The cabin of the MG5 is spacious and feels well made, while the new 10.25” touchscreen media system looks smart and is easy to navigate around. Visibility from within the car is very good, and the relatively large windows make the cabin feel even more spacious and inviting.
