New Toyota Hilux GR Sport – With Rally-Inspired Performance & Style as Standard.

Toyota Hilux GR Sport – Rally-Inspired Performance & Style.

The Toyota Hilux pick-up started production in March 1968 in short-wheelbase form with a 1.5-litre 76bhp engine, which was upgraded to a 1.6-litre unit 3 years later. Times, trends and tastes have changed dramatically since the late 1960’s, and the Hilux has been through many incarnations over the intervening decades. More than 18 million examples of the Toyota Hilux have been produced since 1968, but the latest version is more appealing than ever. Because the new Hilux is engineered and tested to operate in the world’s most extreme environments, drivers can rely on the legendary quality, durability and reliability that forms part of every vehicle.

Engine & Transmission Options.

The current Toyota Hilux is in its eight generation, and a recent refresh brings with it a new exterior design, along with a new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel (D4D) engine with an increase of 54bhp and 100Nm of torque over the 3.0-litre engine it replaces. However, Toyota’s 2.4-litre D4D engine is also available (model dependent). The new Toyota Hilux is available in a choice of four trim levels – DLX (2.4-litre D4D, single or double cab), SR5 (2.4 or 2.8-litre D4D, double cab only), Invincible (2.8-litre D4D, double cab only), and the new flagship ‘GR Sport’ trim (2.8-litre D4D, double cab only). While the DLX and SR5 models are only available with a six-speed manual transmission, an upgrade to Invincible or GR Sport trim will include a 6-speed Super Intelligent ECT automatic transmission as standard. Dynamic improvements in the new Hilux provide enhanced driving performance on and off-road. Suspension enhancements result in on-road ride comfort improvement and even better off-road capability, while variable flow control provides improvement in steering function. Auto Limited Slip Differential delivers improved acceleration on low-grip surfaces in 2WD mode, while Off-Road Assistance provides useful features to help tackle the most challenging terrain. The Hilux has built a reputation for being a go-anywhere vehicle, and the new model upholds that tradition. This is made possible by way of its 29-degree approach angle, 310mm ground clearance, 26-degree departure angle and 700mm wading depth, and these impressive figures provide the Hilux driver with the confidence to go far off the beaten track with ease.

Test Vehicle.

My test vehicle was a new Hilux GR Sport in standard double cab guise. Finished in striking Ice Pearl White pearlescent paintwork with contrasting black wheel arch protectors, black sidesteps and 17-inch bi-tone alloy wheels. Exclusive GR Sport exterior detailing includes new front & rear bumpers, LED front fog lamps, wide side fenders, and a specifically-tuned suspension, along with a gunmetal Toyota Hilux badge on the tailgate. Exclusive interior features include a GR Sport-emblazoned leather steering wheel, suede & leather upholstery, and push-button start/stop control. This is in addition to a comprehensive list of standard comfort, convenience, visibility, infotainment and navigation features, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality also included. Producing 204bhp and a mighty 500Nm of torque, the new Hilux GR Sport can sprint from 0-100km/h in an impressive 10.7-seconds, and has the capability to carry a 1,010kg payload in its load bed, while a 3,500kg towing capacity with a braked trailer ensures that the Hilux has the necessary ingredients to succeed in the competitive pick-up market in Ireland. In spite of pandering to the luxury end of the pick-up truck market, the new Hilux has certainly not forgotten its roots. While it is better looking, better to drive and better equipped than ever before, it is still as tough as ever, and has a wider load bay and bigger capacity than any of its predecessors, while it still rides on a heavy-duty leaf-sprung live rear axle. Additionally, Toyota has tuned the suspension to deliver a smoother ride when unladen, and this has certainly been a very worthwhile revision. The new Hilux also excels in terms of safety too, with all trim levels equipped with ‘Toyota Safety Sense 2’ as standard. This advanced safety system includes: Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Road Sign Assist with Sign Recognition, Traction Control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill-Start Assist, Emergency Brake-light Signal, SRS airbags and a Tyre Pressure Warning System.

High-Quality Cabin.

The cabin of the new Hilux has been made more attractive too, with a design that looks like it came from Toyota’s passenger cars, rather than a commercial vehicle. There is good space for five adults, with plenty of head, leg and elbow room on offer for all occupants. Large glass areas around the cabin result in terrific visibility, but also makes the cabin light and airy, while the suede & leather upholstery in my test vehicle provided support and comfort in equal measure, and looked very durable too.

Verdict & Pricing.

Rigorous testing, and unique component design, has resulted in the new Toyota Hilux being the most adaptable, most dynamic and most capable version yet. The new Toyota Hilux is priced from just €34,980, with my test vehicle priced from €59,610 (all prices are inclusive of VAT). A 3 year/100,000km manufacturer’s warranty comes as standard to ensure every journey runs smoothly. Optional transport and protection features available include a Protection Pack, and a Black Pack, along with a black or aluminium roll cover with high over-bar.
